Keep reading and make sure you are doing all of these things to save on the expenses you have the most control to change.
Driving Habits that Minimize Fuel Expenses
Adopting fuel-efficient driving habits can make a significant difference in fuel usage. As a business owner, managing these habits for yourself or for the drivers in your fleet is one of the easiest ways to see instant savings. Here are just 3 examples:
Plan Smarter Routes: If you are a Prime Advantage+ Cardholder, don’t forget to use our Route Optimizer! Just open your app, input your details, and let our Route Optimizer do the rest! You will get smarter routes to reduce unnecessary mileage and expenses.
Maintain a Steady Speed: Use cruise control where possible to reduce unnecessary acceleration and braking. Fluctuating speeds can significantly impact fuel economy.
Reduce Unnecessary Idling: Turn off the engine when you are making long stops. Idling your engine burns unnecessary fuel and costs your trucking company money.
Purchase Trucking Equipment that Minimizes Fuel Expenses
Purchasing equipment spec’d for great fuel economy gives you a strong foundation for spending less on fuel.
We talked to Davey Robinson, a 20 year diesel mechanic who now works as a Truck Expert with Pedigree Truck & Trailer Sales, to find out what trucking companies should look for when purchasing used semi trucks with great fuel economy.
Here are some tips to follow:
- Always ask about fuel economy before purchasing a used truck. Most of the trucks in our fleet get 8 to 9 MPG on average- less fuel and more money in your pocket!
- A key factor in this is the fact that these trucks are spec’d to get great fuel economy. Look for a truck with 400 hp and 1750 lbs of fixed torque if you want to ensure you get the most fuel savings. Compared to a truck with 500 hp, your fuel cost will be cut by thousands.
- Purchase a truck with an APU. According to Thermo King, the TriPac Evolution APU consumes around 75% less fuel than an idling truck engine. Every truck at Pedigree is equipped with an APU.
- Check the life of the tires left on a truck before you purchase it! Not only is it expensive to purchase a new set of tires, the wrong tires or tires that are improperly inflated can reduce fuel economy significantly. Every Pedigree customer gets a new set of virgin, name brand tires on their
truck. We want you to set off on the right foot!
